Beware of Spiritual Dementia

Welcome to our second installment of our exciting series on Deuteronomy which we titled, Dear Prodigals.

Today, I want to preach the message, “Remember.” Imagine God speaking to you right now, “Remember! Remember My sacrifice for you. Remember My favor over your life. Remember how much I love you.”

Let me start with a sad and scary story.

I have an elderly friend who is a daily Mass goer.

Already in her 80s, she rides a tricycle to church like clockwork every morning, and after Mass, she hops back into a tricycle to go home. This woman was so strong and feisty, her daughter living with her couldn’t stop her Mom from going out alone.

But one fateful day, the daughter gets alarmed because her mother didn’t arrive home at the usual time. She ran to the church but couldn’t find her. You can just imagine her panic.

Let me cut the suspense and fast forward to the end of the story.

A few hours later, a tricycle driver spotted my elderly friend walking on the street, totally lost. When the driver asked where she was going, she said, “I want to go home.” But when he asked where she lived, she couldn’t remember her street. And when the driver asked for her name, she couldn’t remember it too.

It was the cruel blow of Alzheimer, coming like a thief in the night. Dementia, the broader term for the decrease of mental ability, was taking over her brain.

But there is another horrible disease that’s worse than this: Dementia of the Soul. It’s when you forget your spiritual identity, your spiritual destiny, and your spiritual family. It’s when you forget who you are, why you live, and where you belong.

And just like my elderly friend, if you have soul dementia, you won’t be able to find your way back to your spiritual home.

May you be protected and healed from this disease. Have a blessed Feast today!

May Your Dreams Come True,

Bo Sanchez
